Everything you read actually happened and despite being told by various experts that working in such conditions for long periods was detrimental to one's health, he saw no evidence of shingles, hallucinations, nervous rashes or uncontrolled twitching (except possibly when thinking about Sophia Loren).

It is worth remembering that working offshore wasn't compulsory and you could leave if you wanted to.
