Rob and Tom are monitoring the oil wells on a far away frozen planet when one of the wells fails. The safety system reacts and seals the well. Then, another fails and is sealed automatically. They both relax until the whole oil field begins to fall apart, every well failing, one after the other. The safety system doesn't react. There is something out there, moving across the oil field, something totally unexpected and very dangerous. Rob and Tom venture out onto the ice in search of a scientist, the Professor, leaving John and Julie to monitor their progress from the comfortable control room.
