Toby Noble takes his life for granted: his loving family, his countless friends, his upcoming college days, even his intimacy with the most sought-after girl in town. He has no idea how much it all means to him—until everything, save his own being, vanishes.
In a flash of lightening he is a stranger to everyone and everything in town. The people he knew are gone; the places he knew have either changed or disappeared. Life itself, as he knew it, is different.
In a state of near-shock, he stumbles into the acquaintance of Cathy, a beautiful teenage girl who has no idea who he is or why he’s behaving so strangely but wants to help.
He feigns amnesia and accepts her offer of refuge with her and her parents. Gradually, he come to realize what’s happened to him, but knows no one will believe it without proof.
Then an explosion maims or kills dozens of Latino immigrants. A few days later, two teenagers are savagely murdered. Then four more. The assaults continue. People in the small of town of Blue River, Nebraska, sense an evil presence and suspect the mysterious teenager with “amnesia.”
Cathy and her parents choose to believe in Toby, however, and—despite recurring doubts and fears—give him what they hope is the help he needs to recover his memory and move on with his life. As that process stalls at nearly every turn, Toby realizes what he must do to survive: either find the old life for which he still grieves or expose the demons now terrorizing Blue River and prove their guilt to a skeptical community.
