Max's life is thrown into turmoil when he is made redundant from his job with a large London insurance company, and with no money coming in, he is forced to take a bar job as a stop-gap.

During his search for work he spends more and more time with his house mate, Kate, and gradually realises he has found the job he wants, and doesn't want to return to the world of insurance.  The announcement of this fact to his family, however, is easier put off.

Within days of starting his new job a family crisis forces him home to Norfolk, where he finds his family divided, the consequences of which are devastating.

On returning to London Max and Kate take their friendship a step too far, and Max moves into the pub where he begins training as an assistant manager.  Here, Jill, a nurse from New Zealand quickly becomes the most important relationship of his life.  Max's friendship with Kate runs parallel with his relationship with Jill, and with Jill's imminent departure to New Zealand, Max must decide where his life is going to be.

With Jill gone and Max planning his trip to New Zealand, he and Kate spend more time together which throws a spanner in the works come departure day.

At Heathrow airport Max is faced with a decision.  Should he stay and further his career in the pub trade or will he head south?
