Alexis de Tocqueville was a French historian and political scientist best known for the work Democracy in America on the American political system.
Tocqueville is in the row with the greatest political and economic thinkers Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Keynes, John Locke, Frederic Bastiat, Baron Montesquieu, and John Mill.
His contributions to political economics is his theory on the improved living standards and social conditions of individuals and their relationship to the market. His thoughts have become the foundation of the democratic states.
Tocqueville also forecasted rising of the United States and Russia as the two main global powers in his book Democracy in America as the follows:
"There are now two great nations in the world, which starting from different points, seem to be advancing toward the same goal: the Russians and the Anglo-Americans... Each seems called by some secret design of Providence one day to hold in its hands the destinies of half the world."
According to Tocqueville’s long tour in the States, he concluded the core value that is still living today as “I must say that I have seen Americans make a great deal of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend a faithful support to one another”.
John Stuart Mill made essential contributions to social theory, political theory and political economy. He has been called "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century".
Since its founding, the United States has been a liberal society as John Mill put it, “the only freedom worthy of the name is pursuing our own good in our own way.” Mill’s liberals about economic freedom and legal and religious freedom remain strong influences in the U.S.
An important contribution of John Mill to us is to focus on political freedom and the role of the state as both potential friend and foe to liberty in mass industrial society.
Influenced by Tocqueville's book of American Democracy, John Mill believed in that Individuality is better than massive social uniformity.
The works on DE TOCQUEVILLE ON DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA VOLUME ONE and VOLUME TWO are Mill’s most influential contributions to social theory. Mill had a concern that the danger of democracy is that of suppressing individual differences and of allowing no sufficient space for minority opinion and culture. The works DE TOCQUEVILLE ON DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA VOLUME ONE and VOLUME TWO are one of the most widely read of all books on social theory in the world as Mill's On Liberty and On the Principles of Political Economy.
The reasoning by Tocqueville and Mill still remains as relevant today as it was then. This book is one of the most important ones about the deepest thoughts of democratic society by Tocqueville and Mill, two of the greatest thinkers of political economics on the planet.
The book is already read more than a hundred years and it will still be read for another century due to its truths. If you wanted to know the characters of America, the book will give the answer.
