Starts out like a Young Adult novel but complicates gradually and climaxes in flames, with a light touch of romance thrown in for good measure. Written for mature lovers of satisfying stories, this is not your kid's sci-fi (but feel free to share if you determine your kids are at the appropriate age and maturity level to handle the material!).
Once upon a time, a spaceship crash-landed on the planet Enistan. It's crew introduced strange and disruptive ideas to the orderly society, which caused insanity to infect the indigenous population. An emergent subculture sought to suppress traditional teachings and rule over all. As a result, most Enistians lost their empathic abilities.
Though few retained these gifts, many continued to covertly embrace The Way.
In this story, four youths set out to learn the lessons their Uncle cannot teach them, the kind only experience and interaction will impart. Watched over and sometimes guided by deities they are unaware of, these young Enistians survive intensely challenging and often violent experiences, to find love and become the leaders they are destined to be.
Which is fortunate, because the planet and its companion sun co-exist in an unstable orbit with another star. The deities know that in time Enistan will succumb to these world-destroying forces. The future potential of any Enistian to join, after their deaths, the deities in the Realm of Conscience, lies in returning tradition to the planetary culture today.
