Eventually, she found a motel away from the busy highway. It looked deserted as she drove onto the parking lot near the office. As she left her car and walked inside, she had to ring a little bell on the desk to summon someone.
A man walked out of a side door. He looked to be in his early thirties with black hair in a style just a little longer than men normally wore. She saw toughness lining his face as she studied him. He glanced down at her with the greenest eyes she’d ever seen on a person. He stood well over six feet with a muscular body to boot. She didn’t know why she was taking such an inventory of the man gazing across at her, but she found his looks pleasing to the eye.
“May I help you?” he asked, with thick dark eyebrows lifting in a questioning gesture. He had a welcoming friendly face and voice which she solely appreciated right then.
“I’d like a room,” she told him removing her money from her purse.
“Why aren’t you heading out of town like the rest of the population?” he asked another question as he removed a book from beneath the desk for her to sign. “It seems everyone is on the move and I can’t blame them.”
“I might ask you the same thing,” she murmured, signing her name and handing him the money. “You should have locked up and made an effort to leave.”
“Since I’m home on leave from the service, I promised my parents’ I’d manage the motel until they returned,” he explained his position.
“What branch of service are you in?” she asked.
“I’m a navy seal,” he answered.
Mia then realized why he had such a tough look about him. Most navy seals were trained relentlessly and could face any obstacle in their way.
“I keep asking myself what’s the point in keeping the motel open. Everyone is heading out to points unknown. From the news reports, it looks as if we’re being invaded throughout the country and nowhere is safe. They’re everywhere that I can tell.”
“I suppose you’re right about people trying to find a safer place, but I’m going to wait for my fiancé to join me and we’ll figure out a plan on what we to do,” she told him.
