I knew my luck had run out and bolted before the cops could get out their car. My heart was pounding as I jumped over fences to get away. Coming out on the next street over, I ran across and jumped into the next yard. This yard had a couple of big dogs. Luckily for me they were asleep—until I landed in their yard.

In their surprise they failed to attack until I was almost at the back wall. I felt one of them snap at my heels as I jumped over into the next yard, only to land on top of a barbecue. The barbecue collapsed and I nearly fell into the swimming pool.

By now every dog in the neighborhood was going crazy and the police helicopter had joined the search. I cleared another wall and almost ran smack into a cop. “Freeze, asshole! Keep your hands in the air and turn around slowly,” he screamed while holding a shaking gun and flashlight in my face. He must have thought he had just captured Charles Manson by the way he acted.

He was quickly joined by more cops and a bright searchlight from the helicopter. Somebody was speaking into the radio saying they had the suspect in custody. I was searched, cuffed and kicked in the balls. This was standard procedure for those who run from the law. The kicks continued as I sank to the ground, but they caused little in the way of pain compared to the first one. I was unceremoniously dumped into the back of the cop car and taken to the Norwalk substation for booking.
