An Amish Winter Surprise is a continuing short story volume that begins with Delivery in Paradise. In the first volume, Lizzie Yoder narrates a story about how a sudden "surprise" boy, named Elmer Yoder, comes to their Amish community and changes her world. He does everything better than her: he climbs trees faster, jumps rope faster, and even cranks banana ice-cream faster.
However, when his mother confesses a secret sin before the church, Lizzie becomes his biggest supporter. His sister,
Rachael, encourages her to invite him fishing so that she can kiss him on the lake pier. However, when the plan backfires, and he calls Lizzie a "boy," she sets out to prove that she is a woman.
Lizzie's grandmother lives in an apartment atop their farmhouse.
Suddenly, when a medical emergency occurs, ans she has to run to the phone shanty to call Rachael, Elmer ends up being on the receiving end of the phone. Can she lean on him, although he called her a "boy," and will she eventually prove that she is woman?
