Ralph (he hates to be called Mr. Hill) is an eighty-four-year-old man living in the South East of England. He believes he has led a charmed life and tells the story of his childhood and growing up in a changing world. He then adds the story of the final hours of a Lancaster Bombing in which his brother was killed. In a complete change of direction, the next piece is about a system for playing contract bridge called The Amenable Club. For one who has hated the disputes following some games, he has tried to devise a system that will cause the least friction between players. His greatest hope is that he has amused you and not offended you, the reader, in any way. He speaks of real people in his biography but gives no names where he thought they would give offense.
