The past haunts the present as journalist Impey Dalrymple finds. Ghosts are unleashed when she introduces her childhood playmate Natty Bell to her new friend Lady Olga Brancaster.  Natty, now a television interviewer, wants to join Bisley Heath Golf club where Lady Olga Brancaster is President.  Though unimpressed by Natty's celebrity status, Lady Olga is excited to hear that Natty has worked on a programme which traces people's ancestry for Olga has Russian ancestors.

Once Natty starts to investigate the peeress's life history, he current life starts to unravel.  A revered champion, though President, Lady Olga is already locked in a feud with the current dazzling star of Bisley Heath club, the glamorous ace player, Flick Challenger. When one finds the other battered in a bunker, the club plunges into a crisis.

Caught in the fray, Impey, herself a journalist, finds herself once again drawn into the part of sleuth.  An expert in animal behaviour, she finds she can use her skills to distinguish friends from enemies.
