The most common cause of thyroid disorders in industrialized countries including the U.S. is autoimmune thyroid disease. The disease process is caused by thyroid antibodies, also called auto-antibodies sent from the immune system that mistakenly recognize the thyroid gland an an intruder or invader in the body.
Over time, thyroid autoimmunity causes hormone imbalance resulting in either hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
In this ebook, I have endeavored to provide a study resource on the subject of thyroid antibodies, including my perspective and experience as an autoimmune thyroid disease patient with hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Subjects addressed in the chapters, include descriptions of these thyroid antibodies and how they are blood-tested for, to detect developing or overt thyroid diseases. An important question also discussed, is that of whether or not symptoms of thyroid disease can occur as a result of thyroid antibodies, before hormone levels become abnormal (short answer - "yes").
NOTE: This ebook is approximately 6,929 words in length. It is not an extensive medical journal but rather contains aspects of information on the subject that most laypersons would be seeking.
CONTENTS:
CHAPTER ONE: Facts about Thyroid Antibodies
CHAPTER TWO: Do Thyroid Antibodies Cause Symptoms Apart From Abnormal Hormone Levels?
CHAPTER THREE: Hereditary Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
CHAPTER FOUR: Epstein-Barr Virus a Cause of Autoimmune Thyroid Disease?
CHAPTER FIVE: Hashimoto's Encephalopathy Rare but Serious
CHAPTER SIX: My Own Experience with Thyroid Antibody Related Symptoms
CHAPTER SEVEN: Autoimmune Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s) a Cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
CHAPTER EIGHT: Doctors Should Test for Thyroid Antibodies
CHAPTER NINE: At What Point Does Thyroid Autoimmunity Cause Hypothyroidism?
CHAPTER TEN: Medical Research Agrees: Thyroid Autoimmunity Contributes to Symptoms
