Toby is an overzealous, pretentious, orange tabby cat that prides himself in his ability to solve crimes. He lives with a retired police officer, Jack, and their life is quite comfortable. Toby has a front and centre seat to cases that Jack gets called in on when the Department is short-staffed, and he gets right down to business solving the crimes! Camden Gale is a troubled young man who believes everyone is out to get him. His and his twin sister Emma's childhood was less than perfect - their parents leaving them to the system at a young age, and the system not being kind to them. After the traumatic rape of Emma, Camden swears to himself that he will not let anyone hurt Emma again. However, it is not Emma people are hurting anymore - it is him. Camden begins to eliminate those people he thinks are not being nice, and he sends them two emails: the first one as a warning, the second one - Are You Listening to Me? When things heat up on the West Coast, Camden decides it is time to move far away from the numerous bodies he has left in his wake of maddness, and he takes a job in the small city of Brantford, Ontario. Little does he know that might be the end of the line for him - his neighbour is Detective Toby! The first time Toby meets Camden, he gets a bad feeling about him. And then, when a strange flu appears to be killing healthy young people, Toby has a gut feeling that Camden is the one responsible. Of course, Jack gets called in on the case, so once again, Toby gets the inside scoop on the investigation, once the police realize whatever is killing all these people is not an ordinary flu, but just might be a serial killer. Camden has no idea what is really going on in the peoples' lives that he targets; all he hears and sees is how they treat him. The demons he had hoped to leave behind begin to torment him, and sooner and quicker than ever before. As the police stuggle to find the killer, Toby is on the job - and it is a good thing, too, because before long he has it all figured out. He just has to discover a way to tell Jack what he knows!
