Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 1 augments Chapter 2 of Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 1,
The Army. This ADRP defines and describes the Army Profession and the Army Ethic. It expands the discussion on the Army Profession’s dual character as a military department of the United States Government and, more importantly, a military profession. It identifies two mutually supportive communities of practice of the profession: the Profession of Arms (Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve forces) and the Army Civilian Corps. It establishes the five essential characteristics that legitimize the Army as a profession: trust, military expertise, honorable service, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession. This ADRP defines membership and certification of Army professionals in competence, character, and commitment. It describes Army culture, describes the Army Ethic, and lays the groundwork for developing the moral identity of the Army Profession and its professionals.
This publication provides the foundation for Army training and education system curricula on the Army Profession, the Army Ethic, and character development of Army professionals.
The principal audience for ADRP 1 is all members of the Army Profession. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication.

ADRP 1 applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), United States Army Reserve (USAR), and Army Civilians unless otherwise stated.
Commanders, staffs, and subordinates ensure their decisions and actions comply with applicable United States, international, and, in some cases, host-nation laws and regulations. Commanders at all levels ensure their Soldiers operate in accordance with the law of war and the rules of engagement. (See Field Manual 27-10.)
