Imagine a world without birds ...

A virulent strain of Avian Flu (or bird flu) affects birds and poultry in south east Asia and quickly spreads to birds flying in from more northern countries for the stopover on their journey south to escape the harsh northern winter. They carry the virus to the birds of the southern hemisphere and it's impossible to stop the spread of the disease. Poultry farms are shut down, dead birds are collected daily. Snakes, spiders, insects and rodents increase as they now have less predators. Due to lack of poultry and eggs, businesses start closing down. Crocodile will take place of chicken in future. People lose their jobs. Vaccines can't be made due to lack of eggs.

Lee, an Asian-Australian, takes us through this epic, visiting his grandmother Muriel, the only resident left in a deserted hamlet in Australia, and taking supplies to her and birdseed for her aviary of native birds. Lee loses his job, but reinvents himself and starts his own business and meets a new girlfriend.

Byron, a young reporter, gets fired from his job at the Daily Mail for speaking out about his feelings on the honesty of reporting, complaining that the authorities should have done more at the beginning of the epidemic, instead of letting things get out of proportion, as is so often the case. He starts his own web page and blogspot and is inundated with input from people who have so many ideas to share.

Not just a novel, this book tells us of the migratory flyways of the world, and makes us realise how easily we can be tipped into an environmental disaster, and what the dreadful outcome will be. There will be no more birds left in the world, no birdsong.

Set in various parts of Australia, this story gives an insight into that country and the birds that live there.
