Shana is thrilled that her first day of school is coming soon. She talks of it to her dog, Mixit and her favorite doll, Lilac. Each morning school is the first of her awakening thoughts. She and her daddy talk about it as he tucks her in bed each night. Even her prayers anticipate the Great Event! Shana and her daddy, Bob, are excited about her preparation for school. Since her mother's death he has delighted in sharing learning basics and wonderful stories with her.

Their well-meaning but nosy neighbor, Mrs. Wright warns that the father, Bob, is inadequate to                                         the task of teaching her. She is sure Shana is running wild.

Shana is thrilled with the imminent prospect of "school." The very idea is cherished and challenging to her. Her whole being responds to the thrill she anticipates in her first grade of school.

There is a problem: she doesn't like to wear shoes! Mrs. Wright is sure this is a character flaw that must be corrected. She even offers to help giving her "bit of polish, a woman's touch."

Both daddy Bob and Shana are content and at peace with the situation, sure that they will work things out in time for that glorious event of school. That is until a person from Child Protection Services shows up to inspect the home and ask questions. The contented household is permeated with a tiny sliver of fear.

Together daddy and Shana begin their response. They first go shopping for shoes. Barefoot Shana continues to enjoy her bare feet. but that shopping opens up new relationships and brings the wonderful goal of school near.
