Awakening in the middle of the night to a psychic cry of help from his twin, Karis persuades a reluctant Malin (his cousin) to accompany him on a three week’s journey to Mythro. It is the middle of the night, in December, with a snow storm on the way and the cousins are not prepared. Furthermore, Karis is not willing to wait until they are. He is convinced terrible things will happen to his family who are now prisoners in their own home, if he and Malin do not leave immediately. They may already be too late.
So they go, accompanied by an enthusiastic Rilse, Malin’s white wolf companion, who is sure he will meet up with other wolves in the colder north. Malin and Karis are also sure they will meet up with other wolves - human wolves - though what faces the enemy will wear and whose colors is yet unknown. If they are successful at freeing the royal prisoners, they will make the return trip south to Godsel, in inclement weather, with an ill king, the queen, a small child, and a fully mounted pursuit behind them. The odds are not in their favor. Will their combined resources and gifts be sufficient to get them to safety?
