High up in the Kentucky mountains is a world hidden from public view. You would never guess, unless you have been here, that people actually reside in this wilderness. I find the mountain folk to be kind enough, yet they are so different from anything I have ever seen. Local custom and tradition are odd and often dark.
My name is Kallie. I live near the top of the tallest mountain range, so high up that the air is thin and crisp and people are few and far between. This is not the land that time forgot, but it contains those people that the world has forgotten. A place that holds no interest for the rest of mankind, civilization has not reached this far yet. I doubt that there has been any "progress" here for over a hundred years. Man is outnumbered here; the wildness of nature rules and survival is the name of the game. I have found that the cost of stupidity here is very high. Been told once is usually once too late.
Simple things that others daily take for granted are not simple here, if they are even a possibility. To survive is a struggle every day. No time for foolishness of bells and whistles and fancy decor; or milk of human kindness or pleasant company. Hard to envision ain't it. If you listen closely to my story it might get easier to see. If it does, maybe you can enlighten me.
I was not born here, I am almost certain of that, but Da has blood ties to this desolate place. I am not sure what that
means, or how that has any bearing on why I am here. But then I know so little about so many things, and almost nothing
about the things that Must really matter. I could really use some help in my search. An impartial viewer with a calm head
and a willing ear might really help. Is there anyone out there, anyone that can hear me? I am Lost and need a guide; some
warmth in a cold world has become hard to find.
I do not want to be one of the forgotten, secreted away to suffer and die unknown. I do not belong here. The problem is
that there is no place that I do belong, at least no place that I have yet visited. I wonder if it is Fate or Destiny; and
if so, can it be changed?
The only thing that I now hope is to find what I am searching for; I have listened to the locals and now tonight I make my
way to a spot which may contain a clue for me. I am headed to a place I have been warned away from, the Mystic Woods at the top of the knoll. I'll have to tell you how that turns out.
Author's Note: All characters are fictional and are the age of adulthood (18 years for humans) or older.
