In a tangled web of mystery lies hidden truth and danger, but not always the answers you were expecting. Blood Relations is the second book in the series and is a modern day murder mystery set in the Arizona/New Mexico area.
Sorrel a retired Investigative journalist is simply seeking peace after the brutal murder of her husband. She opened a small gift shop out of her home in Saddle Gap, with the help of a close friend Teri who runs the daily stuff while Sorel jaunts off on photography shoots with John. John is her old college professor and friend had been helping her find some peace by sharing his love of wildlife photography. It was on one of their biggest trips of the year that this mystery truly starts. Sorrel gets to their met up location a refuge in New Mexico where the morning starts with some amazing views of all the wintering birds as well as an amazing sunrise. When Jon fails to show up but she is instead greeted by Reed a local deputy of Saddle Gap and a friend of John and herself, this is when Sorrel realizes something is wrong….With Reed’s presence Sorrel knows that John is truly in trouble.
Together they start to investigate his unofficial disappearance, along the way they encounter many strange things that at that point don’t seem to really make any sense, a dead body of an unidentified man found by Sorrel in the refuge, strange papers from a company called Blood relations that claimed John was her father, phone messages from John’s attorney, even stranger some coded messages left by John in various places and ways. Sorrel soon determines her friend is in grave danger and needs her help.
Sorrel and Reed have a feisty friendship that teeters on becoming more. She is so gun-shy that she simply bats it off with her sass and a strong need for independence. Reed who seems smitten with her from the very first day is a patient gentleman determined to help her find John while doing all he can to keep her safe. But together pooling their investigative knowledge they slowly unravel the mystery surrounding John’s disappearance.
Sorrel and Reed’s search take them right into harm’s way and they find themselves in many situations that require skill and teamwork to get themselves out of them. This was a well written book with a mystery that kept me guessing from beginning to end.
