This story is true.

It is a disturbing expose of child sexual abuse at the hands of an authority figure, a Canon, in the Anglican Church of Canada in the early 1960’s.

What it is not, unfortunately, is unique.

Historically under reported, statistics still suggest that one in three children will be the victims of child sexual abuse in 2015.

From the initial shocking violation, the abuse continued for four more years. Outwardly she and her family seemed normal. There was a father, mother and two siblings. The mother was a nurse and worked nights, the father a WWII veteran.

The effects of this systematic abuse followed her throughout her life affecting every aspect. She had no idea. No idea that she had been abused, she thought of it as an “affair”. No idea of how her life was affected, until she started to write fifty years later and discovered her muse at her side.

This, then, is the story of historical abuse and its effects. More importantly however it is a story of surmounting and survival. Hopefully somewhere it also answers the question, “Why me?”

To other survivors: I hope you will be able to relate to my experiences. You are not to blame and you are not alone.
