This story is set in rural Hungary, and much of it is spent describing the Hungarian landscape, customs and dress. The story is about a peasant girl who promises herself to a peasant boy on the eve of his leaving for military service. He is detained from returning and reported dead, so her poor but greedy mother coerces her into becoming betrothed to the wealthy local bully. By the time the man she loves does return, she feels she can not break her promise to her bullying fiancee, and the rest of the book concerns her struggle to remain loyal to her cruel, sarcastic fiancee while the man she loves is pleading with her to come with him to Australia.
