It’s the summer of 1921, school had just finished and brothers Tom and Ralph (POV) who live at a fire station where their Dad is a driver of horse drawn steam fire engines, are embarking on numerous schemes to make money for Tom’s ultimate plan. Times and life were hard being raised in a family of eight children but politeness and the words ‘Please’ ‘Thank You’ and respect of one’s parents and older people are expected. A simpler time with no television, video games, cell phones or any of the trappings of our modern society but they understood the value of money, sharing and charity. They hunt for coins with soap in the big city, catch pigeons in the church yard and visit the railway station with success but this would also bring them trouble. Collecting sacks of coal at the Old Wharf and giving to a needy neighbor, just to help and for a thank you. A different but exciting life, riding to an actual house fire on the fire engine, a race between the horse drawn and a new petrol fire engines. The exciting day out to the pub with their Dad and meeting Old Bill, a ratter with his dogs and ferrets and the day trip on a canal barge, through the country-side, having to navigate a long tunnel fill the brothers’ holiday. This summer comes to an end with Tom’s ultimate purchase in the market but not without some disastrous results.
