Now that most Canadian cities have “gone global,” do you feel overwhelmed by how unaware we are of the culture and backgrounds of our new neighbours? Do you wish you knew enough at least to start a conversation with them?
This little book helps get us launched. It starts off in play mode, and it keeps things simple, even when it is helping you to understand some complex realities about why people come here from far away.
The author, Chris Pullenayegem, knows first-hand what it’s like to find his way into the many layers of life in a new land. In person, he is so hospitable, sympathetic, warm and respectful that being his neighbour is always a delight. Ditto for reading his handbook. —Janet Somerville CM, MA, DSL, Former (retired) General Secretary, Canadian Council of Churches

Given our changing demographic, what an opportunity we have to embrace “the other” regardless of background and culture. By listening to God’s heart, Chris brings to life the experiences and struggles of our neighbours and helps us understand our differences in a way that frees us to love. Every household should have this creative book as a resource and guide. —Paulette Kinmond, Director, Supporter Development (Legacy Development, Ethnic Communities, Private & Corporate Development), World Vision, Canada

About the Author: Chris Pullenayegem emigrated from Sri Lanka to Canada with his wife and three children in 2001. His background in law and psychology, extensive leadership experience in private, not-for-profit and public organizations and his life experience in multi-religious, multi-ethnic contexts have given him an incredible perspective on life. Chris is a diehard pragmatist for whom knowledge must ultimately translate to change, which accounts for his excellence in developing curriculum and training materials for change. His life mission is to help people and organizations live and operate at their fullest potential. He specializes in cross-cultural competency training and coaching organizations through visioning and change processes. He can be contacted at chrispullenayegem@gmail.com, or visit www.learning4change.com to learn more about him and his work.
