Detective Chief Inspector Jonah Porter is a hero: his life was changed forever when he was paralysed by a gunshot from an unknown assailant but, against the odds, he has succeeded in resuming his career in the Police Service. To the outside world he appears confident and capable, almost unaffected by his disability.

Young TV researcher, Bethan Abbott, interviews him about his life for a religious programme aimed at inspiring viewers with a story of achievement through adversity. She is intrigued to hear about the murder case that led him to marry a motorbike-mad surgeon; the previously unsolved case that was instrumental in enabling him to return to active service after his injury; and a serial killing that tested his resilience to the limit and deepened his relationship with his friend and assistant Bernie Fazakerley.

As they talk, Bethan discerns, behind his self-assured exterior, Jonah’s vulnerability and dependence on others; but it is this very vulnerability that has given him new strength, through his friends and family.

But who was it who attempted to kill Jonah all those years ago? And will they strike again?
