In the previous book, Sanctuary, David had a new father - Mark Whitehorse. He decided to change his name from Holbrook to Whitehorse, also. Now he has a new mother - Delores. They are a family of three, soon to be four, since Delores is pregnant with a little girl. Mark and Delores are also available as foster parents. David is learning to drive when one of his friends is killed in an accident. One cold, March afternoon, Virgil Miller calls in need of a home for two little girls - Patty age 8 and her younger sister Grace age 5. Delores decides to go on maternity leave so she can be home for the children. The girls connect with the farm animals, which help to ease the adjustment of their new life. Delores must home school the girls, since they don’t know colors, numbers or how to act in groups with others present. Their mother was absent much of the time or sick, as they called her condition. Fortunately, Delores has the help of Mark’s parents, who live on the property.
