Unlike Japan, which awoke quickly to the new industrialism of the West, China was content to glide peacefully along, ignoring the rest of the world, pursuing the wisdom of her philosophers and artists.  But with the turn of the century, as the devastating effect of foreign imperialism begand to make itself felt, a new national spirit awoke.  Menaced by the rising tide of imperialistic aggression, particularly from her neighbour Japan, China has been forced to develop new virile qualitities at the risk of losing the gentler characteristics of her famed and ancient civilisation.  Under the brilliant leadership of Chiang-Kai-Shek she is engaged ina life and death struggle for unity - a struggle which, because of China's peculiar international position, if won, may mean peace for Great Britain, if lost the annihilation of an important and fascinating culture.
