Are you a newlywed, or is your child asking you for a baby brother or sister? If you believe in Calvinism, you have to think really hard before making a decision to have a baby. It is Russian roulette with eternal consequence. It teaches that God creates humans for two distinct purposes. When each baby comes out of the mother’s womb, the “chosen” baby receives a one-way ticket to heaven while the “damned” baby receives a one-way ticket to hell. This fate was decided an infinity ago by God, and he will never change his mind. If such teaching is correct, the parents-to-be had better make sure they know the future of their baby’s sealed destination before they get romantic.

Calvinism has been the most dominant doctrine of conservative Christianity for the past five hundred years. It teaches that Jesus Christ died and shed blood for only a “chosen” few. Is this really what the Scripture teaches us? Has eternal life or death already been predetermined for you and me by the perfect and pleasurable will of the absolute ruler of the universe and beyond? Does our free will to choose matter after all in the Calvinistic world of deterministic fatalism? And ultimately, is such a God good?

We will tackle the mystery of where and how God’s sovereign determinism and human freedom to choose intertwine in lieu of the literal and plain teachings of the Holy Scriptures. We will finally be able to understand, after five hundred years, the most misunderstood word in the whole Scripture: chosen.
