Ten thousand years ago, in what is now modern day Los Angeles, Yowlar, haughty pride-leader of a clan of sabre-tooth tigers, rules piteously over Scrubland Domain and its tar pits. Until the fateful day when he is suddenly accosted by a reptilian humanoid beamed down from a hovering UFO. Introducing himself as Gurgon, the green-skinned alien abducts the prehistoric big cats lock, stock and fleas, transporting them back in time one million years to the dry plains of East Africa. Yowlar wakes and finds himself changed in form against his will to that of a black panther, with the rest of his scattered pride now ordinary leopards. Before departing skywards, Gurgon charges the remade cats with exterminating the apish ancestors of Man evolving in this timeline of prehistory, for they are the seedlings of the extraterrestrial humans the saurian folk ruthlessly eradicated in earlier times to their mutual detriment.
Bushwalker, a timid, female man-ape struggling day to day with her tribe of fellow Uprights, finds her world turned upside down when the demon cat gives in to his implanted urges and hunts the defenceless hominins. One by one the Uprights are picked off by the marauding panther until finally Bushwalker comes out of her shell and takes matters into her own hands. Seizing the position of troop leader, Bushwalker eliminates the head of a rival band of bigger man-apes using a stone knife, enabling her followers to gain access to a coveted waterhole and survive the deepening drought gripping the region. She then resolves to end Yowlar’s killing spree once and for all.
