Disillusioned, deceived, and betrayed by the life he had come to know, Adam Ringer leaves his home in the East as a broken man. Coerced into an early retirement, even with a generous severance package, Adam finds the disruption complete and too abrupt. He settles in the farthest corner of the country and breaks all bonds with those he once knew. With the help of a real estate agent, Sol Rosenthal, he picks a small cabin in the woods in Upstate Washington. Adam hopes the isolation will help heal his bruised spirit and gain some meaning for his existence. Forming an unlikely friendship with Sol, Adam begins to look forward to Sol's regular Thursday night visits. In another part of the forest, a band of misfits struggle to survive on their own. When the group clashes with Adam, they find an adversary unlike any they have ever known. Both Adam and the group learn that, even in the cruelest battle, to never underestimate the power of a single beating heart.
