Matthias F. Cowley was born in Salt Lake City and ordained an Apostle at the age of 39. Although his widowed mother had wanted him to pursue a trade, Matthias Cowley was inclined to the service of the Lord. His patriarchal blessing indicated that he would serve many missions throughout the world preaching the gospel and expounding the doctrines of the gospel to all who would hear.
