Vira is a young woman hunted in a post-apocalyptic underground society, and there's only one rule: People are expendable. Luckily Vira's not the fragile, glass slipper wearing type, and she's not entirely human either. What's in her brain might just get her killed, but not if she and a young bouncer named Damian have anything to say about it.

When Vira saves Damian's life with a well-placed whiskey bottle, chaos starts hounding her even as a tentative friendship forms. As events swirl out of their control, though, the deteriorating world of Haven that was once home gives way to the ever more dangerous blight of 'The Fringe.' Only here among outcasts, misfits, and freaks can Vira make a new beginning with the young man she's started to see as much more than a friend.

In a world ruled increasingly by instinct and fear, however, carving out that new start might not just be daunting. It might lead to death, and among all of Vira's enemies, one especially can't be underestimated: HeLa, the artificial intelligence that once was a tool yet now sees itself as something else entirely…
