Leopoldo Alas García-Ureña (1892 - 1901), conocido por su seudónimo Clarín, inauguró el uso del seudónimo Clarín, tomado del nombre del gracioso en La vida es sueño de Calderón de la Barca. Leopoldo Alas mostró desde el principio de su carrera su inclinación natural por el periodismo en sus diferentes facetas de crítica social y literaria pero también creativa. Fue adherente al libre examen, al espíritu crítico y reformador y al republicanismo liberal por toda su vida. Sus artículos y ensayos periodísticos le convirtieron en el crítico de actualidad más vigente de su época. Como intelectual independiente profesó una literatura comprometida políticamente y estéticamente rigurosa.
