Sexologist Rochelle (Rocky) Wilde has a turbulent past. Twenty-six years ago, she witnessed the suicide of her best friend, Susan Chance. Some in the tiny town of Hillside believe she assisted in Susan’s demise. Others say Rocky shot the gun herself.
Set in Northern California’s Wine Country, DEADLY VIBRATIONS begins when cameras are discovered concealed inside Rocky’s home. Later, six cassettes are found next to an old video recorder in her garage. Unhinged at the prospect of again becoming front-page news, Rocky asks police chief Arnold Tyler, her old friend, to destroy the films.
Instead, Tyler orders newcomer Eric Tanaka to watch over her. Detective Tanaka, however, has problems of his own. Of mixed race, Japanese and Russian, he has endured years of ethnic jokes. As an ex-undercover cop from San Francisco, the officers who worked at his side called him mutt. Nevertheless, Tanaka is good at what he does.
Until he meets Rocky Wilde. Taken in by her beauty and independence, Tanaka falls in like. However, when handed the videotapes, he knows he is in trouble. Only two reasons someone covertly films another. Lust and intimidation. Rocky Wilde has a stalker.
To make the chief happy, Tanaka alone must study the films. But when he watches Rocky Wilde use a vibrator in a scene no man but the most fortunate should ever see, he agonizes about what to do. Hand the tapes over to the lab for others to watch, some of whom went to school with Rocky, and tick Tyler off, or erase the graphic scenes and then return the tapes to the lab?
As Tanaka devolves into obsesses over a woman he hardly knows, the stalker becomes more brazen and soon, Rocky realizes only she can help herself.
