Concept
The book is a short life essay written in the form of letters exchanged between a father, a philosophy professor, and his only daughter. They shared their thoughts on various topics from life values to happiness to family issues.
Purpose
Collected from their e-mail correspondence for a period of time, this book was created to present to her father on the occasion of his retirement as well as to share their views with others.
Characters:
Dad
Paul, Prisca’s dad, a very academic philosophy professor, was expected to retire soon. Rather than being loose, he decided to tighten himself up to do his best until his last semester came to an end. By exchanging correspondence with his daughter, he even tried to stimulate his daughter intellectually to let her be herself.
Daughter
Prisca Kim is a twin mom who previously worked for a NGO, Medecins Sans Frontiers Korea, as a translator. To her, watching her dad outdoing himself made her feel helpless. She just hoped that his father could relishe every moment of his life, instead of being tougher on his way.
Storylines
Paul is a philosophy professor. Just one last semester was left before his retirement. Full of academic passion, he never stopped sitting on the desk alone in his campus, searching and studying. Prisca, his only daughter, wanted to understand who he was and what his thoughts were all about. By exchanging their perspectives on life issues including family relationship, they came to know how to communicate with each other more deeply than before: communication is based on a good personality. Quality comes before quantity when it comes to communication.
At the end, Prisca realized from her own experience that the key to understanding her dad is a curiosity when “why” is applied to him.
