Susan didn't invite the space aliens to use her quilt shop as a staging ground for their invasion of Earth, but they came anyway. Now she needs to find a way to save the planet without making too much of a mess.

The aliens' biggest mistake is disguising themselves as bolts of beige quilting fabric. Susan and her friends know cotton, and this isn't it. With a little luck and a lot of chutzpah, they discover the aliens' weaknesses: lavender attracts them, chenille kills them.

Susan and her friends know they must stop the invasion themselves. First, they want payback - finding out about these critters costs them ruined jeans, singed eyebrows and the loss of one area quilt shop in a fireball. Second, they know no one will believe them until it is too late, so best get on with the job. Drawing on their inner warrior divas, they lay a trap for the beige beasties and battle them to the death.

In the meantime, Susan's daughter Cecily is pining for a career as a film maker, and Susan's mother Edna is pining for adventure. Cecily videotapes everything, hoping to use the footage for her big break, and Edna brings in reinforcements when she calls an old beau on the police force.

To complicate Susan's life, there's Gary, the UPS delivery man. Susan takes only a fleeting notice of him, until his truck crashes with aliens inside, and he becomes part of the resistance. Now she must decide she is ready for a new love with a younger man.

In one short week, Susan finds herself questioning everything she ever knew about who she is, and what the world is. In the end, she learns that love and lavender will overcome everything, even exasperating mothers, starry-eyed daughters, and aliens bent on world domination.
