Denzil has been created as a colourful and very versatile character, designed to explain the terminology and raise awareness of environmental issues at key stage 1 – 2 primary school level.
I see Denzil as a reporter on the environment, taking his reader through the story pointing out and explaining about good and bad environmental practices as he moves from scene to scene.
His story starts as an introduction where he explains in simple terms the meaning behind the words sustainability and environment.
He then asks the reader to travel with him on a journey, and moves swiftly to a landfill site where he explains about the problems of disposing of our unwanted waste.
Denzil flies away from the smelly landfill site and onto a recycling site, there he explains about reusing, repairing and recycling.
From there he takes the reader to the pond where he was born and lived as a nymph and then onto a lovely allotment garden along side a stream full of different creatures. There he meets Vernon the Worm, who explains about composting and also explains about biodiversity (Denzil jokes about adults always making up long words).
Denzil then tells the reader that not all places are as nice as this garden, and flies off to a part of the stream where there has been fly tipping and the water has been polluted. He explains the meaning of pollution and asks the reader what he thinks we can do about it.
Denzil then travels down stream to the seaside, but unfortunately there he finds that people have left rubbish behind them. He talks about this as a problem and tells them about how good people get together to do litter picks and asks them if they think that litter picks are a good thing to do.
