"We will knock on your door when we are leaving so you can close up," the man in charge told Dicey. "You may go to bed now."
"Yes, sir," Dicey said. "Let me just take care of the fire in the kitchen." She gave the man a curtsy, then turned and went to the kitchen.
Dicey hated the British. Dicey and her family wanted America to be free. It was 1780 and the Revolutionary war had been going on for four years.
Her father's house was one of the larger houses in the area. That was why the British men decided to meet there. They thought they could use whatever house they wanted.
Dicey added wood to the fire, then headed toward her bedroom. As she passed by the room the men were meeting in, she heard them talking.
