Kate McCullough is a brilliant trauma surgeon. She has dedicated her life to working to save others in a quest to atone for a tragic mistake in her past. A recovering alcoholic, estranged from her father, she has closed herself off from others, afraid to hurt them or be hurt by them. But when she is forced to help one of her patients, a prisoner, break out of the hospital, her carefully built walls begin to crumble. She is drawn to Mike, a police investigator assigned to the case. But even while she starts to believe this time she can learn to trust and find happiness, he discovers things that makes him question her. Her brother Bode is in prison and there are too many connections between him and the break out crew to ignore. Was she a part of it or just a pawn? Just as they grow closer, the suspicions and accusations blow it all apart. But when the escaped prisoner gets sick, Kate is kidnapped and forced to treat him under threat of death to her brother. Left all alone, scared and unsure who to trust, she takes a leap of faith, relying on Mike to save her brother while she struggles to free herself. In the final confrontation Kate, after dedicating her life to saving people, is forced to kill a man. But death does not always bring closure. Kate discovers there is a man pulling all the strings and seeks the reasons why. She finds that the actions of her father, a man she has seen for the first time in years, has placed her and Bode in danger. More disturbingly, she learns that it may not be over. Determined to find happiness despite all the threats to destroy her, she decides to pursue her growing passion for Mike. But all the while Kate knows there is someone watching her, wanting to take it all away.
