Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions which occur due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. About one in six children in the U.S. have one or more developmental disabilities or other developmental delays. The booklet contains information about over thirty disorders that may impact student learning and behavior. The strategies included are suggested to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning methods; accessibility of course instruction, materials, and activities. They are general strategies designed to support individualized reasonable accommodations for which an exceptional learner is eligible.
The booklet contains one or two page fact sheets which identify common signs and symptoms of disorders, signs to look for in the classroom, and instructional strategies. Recent research confirms that we can teach students with learning disabilities and other disorders how to learn. We can put them into a position to succeed!
