A few years ago a Unitarian minister in a town along the Hudson ventilated his belief that we make too much of Christmas. The birth of Christ, he said, is a legend, the celebration of which involves one-third of the world each year in monumental hypocrisy. Is this true? If so, what should we as believers do about it?
About the author:
Dr. Campbell, Senior Minister at Riverside Church from 1968-1976, stepped down to pursue a more at-large ministry including writing, guest preaching, lecturing, conducting retreats, and leading workshops for ministers. He was actively concerned for civil rights, the migrant worker, a more humane national budget, and fairer treatment for the LGBT community.
A frequent speaker on The Protestant Four, the National Radio Pulpit, and various college campuses, Dr. Campbell also taught courses in homiletics; pastoral theology; and preaching and worship at notable theological institutions, among them Union Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary (his alma mater), Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, Claremont School of Theology and Garrett-Evangelical Seminary. He undertook preaching missions around the world, including Alaska in 1956, Cuba in 1959 and South Africa in 1978. Out of these experiences he wrote three books: Christian Manifesto; Where Cross the Crowded Way; and Locked in a Room with Open Doors. He also wrote a quarterly publication for preachers entitled “Campbell’s Notebook.”
He is survived by his wife, Joan Walsh Campbell, two sons, Erik and David, and two stepsons, Glen and Craig Walsh.
