The first of two novels lays a foundation for the incredible journey of two teenage First Nation boys who grow into men and impact Canada in unique ways. Raised by their grandmother on the Nazko Reserve, one hundred kilometers west of Quesnel, B.C., their world is suddenly turned upside down when she has a stroke and they can’t take her to the hospital.

Weeks earlier, in the fall of 1997, the B.C. government has sent a special task force of social workers to audit Quesnel’s Family and Children Services Office, and screen its caseload for children “at risk.” In the wake of their investigations, 72 children are placed in foster care.

Fearing they too, will be apprehended, 14 year-old Tyler, and 13 year-old Chester take matters into their own hands. With the help of their pretty, next-door neighbour, Tonya Clement, the intrepid trio attempt to escape, with the grandmother, to Kluskus – a reserve fifty kilometres away. The way there, is one of the most rugged bush roads in B.C.’s northern interior – the Kluskus Trail. Traversing the Nazko Volcano, a partially frozen river, through wolf and grizzly territory pushes their endurance and friendships to the limit.
