Marion Dante always knew she would be a nun. She was her mother’s ‘‘sin offering’’, pledged to God even before her birth. So, at the age of fourteen, she entered a convent.

Ten years later, she was wrestling with doubts and misery. Shunned by the nuns, her only ‘‘family’’, she set out on the long road to freedom.

But freedom was a terrifying prospect. Like a caged bird she clung to her prison bars.

Wearing a short skirt, ordering a cup of tea in a café, making everyday chat with a stranger – these were all mountains to climb. And confronting an ATM cash machine was almost enough to send her scuttling back to the convent!

Even more frightening was the question: if she dropped the habit, who then would she be? What would remain of Marion Dante if she broke out of her protective shell?

In this searingly honest book, Marion drops the habit and bares her soul, while opening the doors to the convent and inviting us in.
