I don’t know what your experiences in life have been so far, but I can assure you; you do not have to be at the mercy of your hurting heart. You can learn to take control of your feelings, in spite of how difficult or unrealistic that may seem now. You can heal.
My approach here may be a bit different that what you are used to reading. Instead of focusing on the specific situations that caused your emotional pain, I chose instead to focus on the process of healing, a universal truth that can be applied to all types of pain.
First I explain how your brain and emotions work. Then I concentrate on five specific emotions that plague us all: fear, anger, worry, grief, and sadness/depression. Then I go into the misguided “magical thinking” that may have gotten you into emotional trouble in the first place!
By the way, I’ve presented the information in a way that is conversational and nontechnical. Hopefully this will make it easier for you
to understand. I think you’ll find yourself somewhere in these pages, but in case you need specific advice on dealing with your situation my contact information is available at the end of this book. I would love to hear from you.
In the meantime, remember that the process of healing may not be quick or easy. You didn’t get into the shape you are in overnight and healing takes time; sometimes years. I realize that some of you may not ever be totally free of emotional pain, but I believe that if you apply the techniques you learn here you will get better and the pain won’t be so intense. That is the key: you must take what you learn and make it work for you!
Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive resource; simply a beginner’s guide to understanding the source of emotional pain, and how it relates to the condition of our mind, body, and spirit. In order to get better, you are going to have to know how each aspect of your being works to influence the other, and how to interrupt the toxic cycle of thought and behavior that moves from one part of yourself to another to ruin your mental and physical health, and erode your faith.
In order to do that, I also have to help you answer the big questions we all must settle in our soul, especially when we are overwhelmed by a crisis. After all, much of our negative emotion is rooted in our lack of understanding of the nature of God and why bad things happen to us when we feel we’ve done nothing to deserve them.. I hope to help you resolve those conflicts once and for all.
Knowledge is power, but God says that his people “die from lack of knowledge”. In this day and age, we have access to a great deal of knowledge, but much of that knowledge is not accurate or clinically proven. In order to have the power we need to transform our lives we need accurate information.
So here’s to getting back your power! God bless you and keep you as you begin the journey toward healing your emotions.
