To escape the turmoil in Zandor following the Madini revolt, Gitu, the black Jana, and Cona, the white Highborn, scaled the Mashars and descended to Mirash, where they meet Irasine, a female and Gargon, a dim-witted brute who have been ejected from their village. With the help of the locals who are happy to be rid of them, they build a raft and float down the crocodile infested Kiber River into the domains of two warring ethnic groups occupying separate sides of the river.
Each group maintains members of the others as slaves. The blacks utilize white captives as laborers or as combatants in their arenas while the whites utilize black captives for similar purposes. Landing on the black side of the river, Gitu is assumed the master of Cona. The Jana and Highborn attempt to seek the coast to escape but are captured by slavers who intend to sell each to his opposite kind. Gitu escapes but Cona is given over to the arena on the black side of the river. Gitu goes there seeking to free his friend and, in a comedy of errors, both become embroiled in the war between the ethnic groups. Half breeds from both sides, children of slaves, are ejected to separate dumping grounds. The blacks take theirs to Moggea and the whites take theirs to Klashah. With the help of Gitu, he and Cona escape to the dumping ground of Moggea where they find a disorganized mass of mixed rejects. By sharing their food with the rejects, Cona and Gitu become de facto leaders of the colony. And thus become embroiled in the war between the two factions, which circumstances lead the pair to command a rather twisted revolt that, through a comedy of errors places them in command of the black city of Tigira backed by a ragtag army of rejects. This places them in a position to negotiate the freedom of all present and future rejects, forming a formidable third class of mixed breeds in a natural fortress in the foothills above the dumping ground of Klashah Cona calls New Zandor.
(A stand-alone sequel to Zandor)
