Masurani Sarle owes Aaran Coates a story, so she decides to tell her why and how she became one of the elite KnightsMage. As a young woman in high school, Masurani was on track to become a professional runner. While her father won't let her compete off-planet, he is proud of her budding career. Unfortunately he is caught up in a terrorist attack and killed. Between puberty and grief, Masurani abandons running to pursue the martial arts.

Meanwhile, her 'wish' is granted, gifting her with legendary physical prowess. Her new best friend, Ayani Coates, sees a need in the KnightsMage and asks her to join the government backed organization. Instead of accepting, Masurani forms a gang of friends she calls the 'Jugheads' to protect her home town. Some time later, her mother dies of cancer and Masurani is further estranged. A street fight results in the near death of her opponent, a fact used by the arena owner known as 'Petulant' to coerce her into professional fighting against her better judgement.

Faroh Sarle has marital problems and requests to stay with his favorite niece for a while, and Masurani accepts. Faroh, having previously fought for Petulant, offers some guidance, but she isn't having any. From anyone. Stubbornly she continues to fight for Aim Westfathing, injuries mounting up. Even with the medical aid of Doctor David Namiki, Masurani finds it difficult to continue. Double the Rage Entertainment has the solution: A winner-takes-all championship fight for the title with a Nova cyborg, a remnant of the Crushing War.
