Kate is a 39-year-old woman with two young children, a social worker husband, and a demanding, ever-changing job. While feeling that her job is not what she intended to be doing, she also enjoys the corporate challenges plus the attention a New York superior gives her. Her husband has a meltdown after a friend dies, becoming a totally different person and sleeping one night with an intern after a trauma at work. Kate faces a potential lay off at work, a job transfer from to Denver to New York and romantic overtures from the New York superior. Then her mother is critically injured causing Kate to reevaluate what is important in her life and how she can make it all fit together with her own self interests and her family. When her mother recovers, Kate learns that her mother has not been entirely truthful in her own life, causing her further doubt on who and what she can rely on. While set in 1993, women of all ages can relate to the stress that Kate faces.
