Exiled From the Tundra is a teacher's account of two years spent working in a remote community of 220 Inuit in the Canadian Arctic. By turns harrowing and uplifting, the story details the challenges the Inuit people face in their settlement and one teacher's effort to contribute to the lives of his students while questioning the school system that he is supposed to represent and serve.

Moments before being introduced to his class, a rookie teacher is told that one of his students had committed suicide and that he has to teach the girlfriend and younger sister of this teenaged victim. In the months that follow he deals with various issues among his students, including learning disabilities, teenaged pregnancy, substance abuse and the looming question that his students keep posing, "Why are we here?"

Over the course of the two years he spends with his students, he earns their trust and confidence and poses his own question to them, "What do you want me to teach you?" Their responses shock him and reveal his students' needs and wishes for an education that is relevant to them in their own struggle to survive in an uncertain future.
