The title "False Memory Syndrome" is much more about the author's relationship with this story than it is about the story itself. Certainly, characters in this novel struggle with memory, and separating the fiction from the real. But "False Memory Syndrome" comments on the process of writing from the perspective of the writer. The stories that the writer tells are, on some level, recollections of the events by the author, and the afterthoughts that come with it. The false memory syndrome here is our memory of events that haven't actually happened. Authors, in this respect, are beautiful maniacs.
False Memory Syndrome is about a young prodigy named Lin, about space, about a grand cosmic mystery, and about inevitable destruction. The characters' narratives interrupt one another, and it is up to the reader to connect the dots in this thriller. There are no chapters, only scenes that switch between one another. The story is told by three narrators - from the perspective of Lin, a 16-year-old researcher and scientific prodigy, an astronaut abandoned on a foreign planet, and an empty space ship floating listlessly through the cosmos.
