Rick Sterry grew up near the Canadian border in north central Montana and ranked fourth academically in his high school class of six. Following graduation he left for Southern California, confident that he would be discovered as the next James Dean. When those dreams failed to materialize, he worked his way through college and won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to graduate school.
