In 1934, Ellie Peterson wants to marry her childhood sweetheart, Jack, and move far from the cattle ranch that has been her childhood home. This simple goal becomes complicated when the wild horses begin to disappear, sold to a slaughterhouse. How can she move away right when the horses need her? Worse, Jack sees dollar signs when he looks at the wild horses, and Ellie begins to realize Jack is not the person he presents himself to be.

When Granddad hires Hawser as a new wrangler for the ranch, Ellie doubts this stranger’s motives. He never has much to say, and has a shady way about him that leaves her cold. Granddad sees the good in everyone, though, and refuses to fire Hawser.

To add to the trouble, neighbor animosities are wound tight when the richest family in the county demonstrate outrageous ostentation by bringing a mascot to their ranch: an African lion which proves impossible to contain. Bounty hunters follow the lure of the reward for its pelt.

An unconventional love-triangle forms between Ellie, the wild horses, and a mysterious wolf who seems to appear whenever she needs help.

Told against the panorama of the fading wild west, Fortunes Change celebrates family, home, horses, and a way of life that once seemed eternal.
